Plot summary
Nick runs the Pacific Street Saloon, a bar in San Francisco. Joe is a regular with enough money to stop working, and he sits at a table ordering champagne, observing the people who come and go. Tom believes Joe once saved his life and runs whatever errands Joe sends him on, including bets with a bookie. Willie spends the day at the pinball machine. Dudley Bostwick, a young man in love, keeps trying to telephone his girlfriend, Elsie. Freddie Blick threatens to have the saloon shut down over women hanging around and demands two hundred dollars; Nick refuses, and Blick says he will return in the evening. A blonde who gives her name as Kitty Duval, who says she performed in burlesque, sits at the bar and drinks champagne with Joe.

The Production Code Administration forced the producers to change Blick from a police detective into an informer and blackmailer, and the film kept William Saroyan's original ending, in which Kit shot and killed Blick offstage.SPOILER
Preview audiences reacted unfavourably, so James Cagney asked William Saroyan for a more acceptable ending, but Saroyan priced his work out of Cagney's reach; a new action-packed climax was substituted in which Joe knocks Blick unconscious.- The Cagneys gave their director and cinematographer two weeks for blocking, then changed their minds once filming began, spending freely and breaking their budget.
