Plot summary
In Manhattan, a gangster is murdered and two pedestrians are shot, so Charlie Lupo, head of a New York crime syndicate, asks Johnny Achilles, who runs the Chicago branch, to send a man to deal with those responsible. Nick Magellan, the son of a friend of Lupo's, handles the job, and Lupo makes him his bodyguard, giving him a room in the house. There Nick meets Lupo's mother, Lupo's daughter Kathy, who hates him for his life as a gangster, and Lupo's mistress Iris Palmer, who shows an interest in him. Kathy is drawn to Nick, and he keeps his distance out of respect for Lupo. The syndicate's lawyer, Robert Frawley, arranges an oil deal with corrupt politicians, and Lupo's right-hand man, Ben Dagajanian, must go abroad over immigration problems.
