Plot summary
At Lady Brandon's estate, three adopted brothers, Beau, Digby and John Geste, grow up with her ward Isobel Rivers. Learning that Sir Hector Brandon means to sell the family sapphire, the Blue Water, the brothers ask to see it once more; the lights go out and the stone is stolen. Beau and Digby each leave a written confession of the theft and go, and John, parting from Isobel, follows them. He tracks them to the French Foreign Legion, where Sergeant Markoff drills the recruits. Talk overheard among the men convinces the sergeant that one of the Gestes still carries the sapphire. Beau and John are sent to the isolated Fort Zinderneuf.

- Beau Geste was banned in parts of Canada out of respect for the French government, and fascist authorities in Mussolini's Italy banned it because it portrayed the British too positively, fearing that a democracy's positive portrayal would undermine fascist ideology.
