Biography
Woody Allen, born in the Bronx and raised in Brooklyn, is an American comedian, filmmaker, actor and writer whose career has included film, television and theater. He began as a comedy writer for Sid Caesar specials and later wrote for The New Yorker and Broadway plays, including Don't Drink the Water and, later, Play It Again, Sam. After performing stand-up in Greenwich Village, he wrote, directed and starred in slapstick comedies including Bananas (1971), Sleeper (1973), Love and Death (1975) and Take the Money and Run (1969). Annie Hall (1977) won four Academy Awards, among them Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Allen. He went on to direct New York-set films such as Manhattan (1979), Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) and Hannah and Her Sisters (1986). He has won four Academy Awards and holds the record for most Academy Award wins and nominations for Best Original Screenplay. He also voiced Z in Antz (1998).

About the name
Allen took up the clarinet as a child and borrowed his stage name from Woody Herman, a clarinetist. He has played in public at least since the late 1960s, among them with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on the Sleeper soundtrack.
First role
In October 1960, Allen gave his first professional stage performance at the Blue Angel, a Manhattan nightclub. Shelley Berman, a comedian, introduced him there as a young television writer set to perform material of his own.

Allen has earned 16 Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay, more than anyone else, and won three times, for Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters, and Midnight in Paris.

At the 2002 Oscars, Allen made his only Academy Awards appearance. The academy asked him to introduce a montage of New York City film clips that Nora Ephron compiled, and he got a standing ovation.

Allen's first produced screenplay was What's New Pussycat? in 1965, and his directorial debut was What's Up, Tiger Lily? the following year, co-written with Mickey Rose.
