Plot summary
Sandy Bates directs comedy films, and the surreal train sequence that ends his latest one leaves the studio executives cold. They call it uncommercial and depressing, and Sandy insists he is done with shallow comedy. His managers remind him that a weekend retrospective of his work awaits at the Stardust Hotel on the Jersey Shore, and he goes along without enthusiasm. At the hotel, fans gather around him with odd requests, and he answers questions after the screenings. Memories of Dorrie, a former girlfriend, return through the weekend. After the first session, a young couple, Jack and Daisy, invite him to a club. The next day Isobel, his lover, a married woman with two children, arrives at the hotel.

- The seaside hotel was really the Ocean Grove Great Auditorium and the Methodist Episcopal Conference Center in New Jersey, most interiors were shot in a vacant Sears Roebuck building, and the crew recreated a vintage train at Filmways Studio in Harlem, mounting it on jacks and jostling it to reproduce a rail car's movement.
