Plot summary
Manhattan, 1940. At an insurance company, veteran investigator C.W. Briggs works on instinct and a wide network of informers. Betty Ann Fitzgerald is hired as an efficiency expert to modernize the office, and the two clash over his old-fashioned methods. She is secretly involved with their boss, Chris Magruder, who promises to leave his wife for her. At a Rainbow Room party, the magician Voltan brings the pair on stage and, with the jade scorpion pendant swinging from his hand, puts them under hypnosis and tells them they are in love. He also gives each a separate trigger word that returns them to that state.
