Plot summary
Lionel Dobie is an acclaimed abstract painter who cannot paint in the days before a gallery exhibition of his new work. Paulette, his assistant and former lover, lives with him in the studio-loft and wants only his tutelage; she dates other people, which makes him jealous. In a Manhattan luxury hotel, 12-year-old Zoë returns a valuable jewel to an Arab princess and works to bring her divorced parents, a photographer and a flautist, back together. Lawyer Sheldon Mills complains to his therapist about his critical mother, Sadie Millstein, and wishes she would disappear. He brings his fiancée Lisa to meet her, and his mother embarrasses him; at a magic show with Lisa's children, the magician invites her on stage.
