Plot summary
Fielding Mellish works in New York testing products for a large corporation, and Nancy is the first woman he has dated in a long while. She is a social activist who met him while gathering signatures on a petition that asked the United States to break off ties with the government of San Marcos. When Nancy ends the relationship, Fielding decides that joining her cause is the way to win her back, and he travels to that Latin American republic. There the elected president has been assassinated and General Emilio M. Vargas now rules as a military dictator, while revolutionary forces under Esposito oppose him. Fielding is an American, and both the general and the rebels find a use for him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Bananas (1971)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The scene in which musicians appear to mime playing their instruments at General Vargas's dinner was an accident of production: the rented instruments never arrived on set, so Woody Allen decided the miming suited the film's tone.
- Bananas originally ended differently: Fielding was to give a revolutionary speech at Columbia University and emerge from an explosion in blackface, until co-editor Ralph Rosenblum persuaded Woody Allen to change it.
