Plot summary
Djuna, called DJ, narrates the doings of her extended Manhattan family. Her mother Steffi and stepfather Bob are lawyers with a blended household, where Bob's son Scott airs conservative politics that offend the rest. DJ's half-sister Skylar is in love with Holden, who works in Bob's firm and asks DJ to help him choose an engagement ring. Steffi's ex-husband, the Paris writer Joe Berlin, has just been through another breakup. On vacation in Venice, DJ and a friend eavesdrop on a therapist's clients through a hole in the wall, and DJ hears Von Sidell, an art historian, describe the romance she longs for and her discontent with her husband. She coaches Joe to present himself as the man of Von's dreams.

- Drew Barrymore convinced Woody Allen that her singing was too awful even for the realistic-voice style he wanted, so her songs were dubbed by Olivia Hayman; Allen asked Goldie Hawn, a gifted singer, to sing badly for the same effect.
- The film's title song came from the Marx Brothers' Horse Feathers (1932), and it also uses the Marx Brothers' Animal Crackers theme "Hooray for Captain Spaulding," sung in French by a chorus of Groucho Marxes.
