Plot summary
The setting is upstate New York in 1906. Leopold Sturges is a distinguished philosopher, and Ariel Weymouth, his fiancée, is much younger than he is. They travel to the country for a weekend with Leopold's cousin Adrian and her husband Andrew, an inventor. Maxwell Jordan, a doctor who chases women, is also invited, along with Dulcy Ford, his girlfriend, a nurse with free-thinking views. They gather at a striking country house that may be magical. Old romances reignite and new ones develop among the guests.

- Mia Farrow's role of Ariel Weymouth in A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy was originally written for Diane Keaton, another Woody Allen collaborator, but Keaton was busy promoting Reds and preparing production on Shoot the Moon, so Farrow took the part.
- Mia Farrow was nominated for Worst Actress at the 3rd Golden Raspberry Awards for the film, the only time a Woody Allen film has ever been nominated for a Razzie.
