Plot summary
Ray Winkler washes dishes for a living and shares a small apartment with his wife, Frances, known as Frenchy. He has spent time in prison, and he has a plan for a bank robbery: take a lease on a building that once housed a pizzeria and dig from its basement through to the bank down the street. A few partners in crime join the work underground, while Frenchy covers for them by opening for business upstairs. She cannot make pizza, but her cookies are good. The tunnel goes badly and the diggers lose their way, and it is the cookie counter, not the bank, that brings in money. Frenchy brings in her cousin May to lend a hand.
