Plot summary
Virgil Starkwell is clumsy and socially awkward, and since his mid-twenties he has spent time in prison, mostly for armed robbery. As a child he is bullied. He steals a gun to hold up an armored truck, and when guards shoot back he finds his pistol is a cigarette lighter. Out on parole, he tries to rob a pet shop and a gorilla chases him away. In a park he meets Louise, a laundress, and wants to marry her.

- Woody Allen had originally wanted Jerry Lewis to direct Take the Money and Run; when that did not work out he directed it himself, a decision partly spurred by the chaotic and uncontrolled filming of Casino Royale (1967), in which he had appeared two years previously.
- One of the actors in the San Quentin scenes, Micil Murphy, knew the prison well: he had served five and a half years there for armed robbery before being paroled in 1966.

Allen initially filmed a downbeat ending in which he was shot to death, courtesy of special effects from A.D. Flowers; the lighter ending is reputedly due to the influence of his editor Ralph Rosenblum, in his first collaboration with Allen.
