Biography

Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, and raised in Maryland, Wanda Sykes is an American comedian, actress, and writer who began performing stand-up in 1987 and got her first big break opening for Chris Rock. She became a writer on The Chris Rock Show in 1997, and the team won a Primetime Emmy in 1999. She became known for recurring roles on The New Adventures of Old Christine and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and earned Emmy nominations for her guest work on Black-ish and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Her film work includes Monster-in-Law (2005), My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006), Evan Almighty (2007), and License to Wed (2007). She voiced characters in Over the Hedge (2006), Barnyard (2006), Brother Bear 2 (2006), Rio (2011), Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012), and UglyDolls (2019). She has starred in the Netflix sitcom The Upshaws and co-hosted the 94th Academy Awards in 2022.
