Plot summary
A crate falls off a truck near Moose Lake, Minnesota, and the young blue macaw inside is taken in by Linda Gunderson, who calls him Blu. Fifteen years on, Blu is domesticated and unable to fly. The ornithologist TĂșlio Monteiro tells Linda that Blu is the final surviving male of his kind and that one female is left in Rio de Janeiro, and he asks them to come. Linda and Blu travel to TĂșlio's aviary, where Blu meets Jewel, a macaw who longs for the wilderness. The two clash at once.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Saldanha first developed the story in 2006 around a penguin washed up in Rio, then changed the concept to macaws on learning of the penguin-themed films Happy Feet and Surf's Up.
- Jemaine Clement landed his role after the crew saw test footage of him improvising a speech from Flight of the Conchords, made before the script was even finished.
- Neil Patrick Harris was originally set to voice Blu but had to drop out due to other commitments, and Jesse Eisenberg took over the role instead.
- The film was dedicated to the memory of director Carlos Saldanha's own mother, who died during production.
