• By the end of its production, Evan Almighty had become the most expensive comedy film ever made, a record it would later lose to Men in Black 3.
• The original screenplay, then titled The Passion of the Ark, set off a seven-studio bidding war in April 2004 and sold to Sony for $2.5 million plus a cut of the profits, a record deal for a spec script from previously unproduced writers.
• Jim Carrey was asked to return as Bruce for the sequel, and when he turned it down, director Tom Shadyac talked Steve Carell into taking the lead role instead.
• The film's budget started at about $140 million, already a comedy record, then climbed to $175 million on set construction, effects, and animal-wrangling problems, and to roughly $200 million once marketing was added, a ballooning cost that caused Sony to drop the project and hand it entirely to Universal.
