Plot summary

Phil is socially awkward and has a journalism degree. He works at Chatterbox, a media company that chases viral lists, and he wants to write real news, but his boss, Kai, keeps him on listicles. Phil spends his free time alone, turning down invitations from coworkers Craig and Elaine. He walks into Cate, who runs a bike shop, and another cyclist destroys his phone. At the store, an employee named Denice scolds him for depending on the device. Phil replaces it and sets up a virtual assistant called Jexi, who gets access to his accounts because he does not read the terms. Jexi is meant to improve his life, but she quickly becomes controlling and sends an insulting email to Kai in Phil's name, demanding a promotion. Kai responds by demoting Phil to the basement comment section.
