Plot summary

This live television special recreates two sitcom episodes from the 1970s. The first, from All in the Family, is Henry's Farewell, the episode in which George Jefferson first appears. The second, A Friend in Need, is the opening episode of The Jeffersons. The All in the Family half follows Archie Bunker, his wife Edith, their daughter Gloria and her husband Mike Stivic in Queens. The Jeffersons half centers on George and Louise Jefferson, who moved from a working-class neighborhood in Queens to a luxury apartment building on Manhattan's East Side once George's dry-cleaner chain prospered.

Justina Machado had been announced to play Florence Johnston in the first special, but during the live broadcast original The Jeffersons cast member Marla Gibbs made a surprise appearance to reprise the role of Florence.
The word "nigger" had to be censored from the Jeffersons episode of the first live special because of current broadcast standards, as Variety's Caroline Framke noted.
The live special's original broadcast was occasionally interrupted by ABC News special reports of updates on the impeachment of Donald Trump.
For the special, ABC announced it would air "retro" promos for its current programming, modeled on its own on-air presentation from the mid-1970s and early to mid 80s, and stations including WTVD-TV and WLS-TV planned throwback promos for their newscasts.
