Plot summary
Charlie Cantilini works as a temp, walks dogs, teaches yoga and designs clothes in Venice Beach, California. She meets doctor Kevin Fields, and at first she takes him for gay. He asks her out, the two become a couple, and she believes she has finally found the right man. Then Kevin brings her to meet his mother, Viola, who hosted a talk show after a career in news and was recently pushed out in favor of a much younger woman. Viola's reaction to that loss landed her in a facility for several months. She dislikes Charlie on sight, mostly for her temp work. When Kevin proposes, Viola fears losing her son the way she lost her job, and she sets out to end the relationship.
