Biography

Denis Leary is an American stand-up comic and actor who was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. He first gained attention as a stand-up comic through MTV appearances, including the song Asshole, and the specials No Cure for Cancer (1993) and Lock 'n Load (1997). In the 1990s he moved into film and television, with roles in Judgment Night (1993), Demolition Man (1993), The Ref (1994), Suicide Kings (1997), Wag the Dog (1997), and The Thomas Crown Affair (1999). He voiced Francis in A Bug's Life (1998) and Diego in the Ice Age movies. On television, he starred in The Job and co-created and starred in Rescue Me, earning Emmy nominations for acting and writing, and he was nominated for Recount (2008). He appeared as Captain George Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and in Draft Day (2014), and he wrote and starred in Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll from 2015 to 2016.

  1. A role that slipped away

    Leary turned down the part of Dignam in The Departed, a 2006 film, because his schedule for Rescue Me conflicted.

  2. Early training

    At Emerson College in Boston, Leary started the Emerson Comedy Workshop while he was a student. That troupe still continues on the campus today.

    Leary's first real gig came on October 18, 1990, when he performed at the Rascals Comedy Club as part of the TV show The Rascals Comedy Hour.

  4. Behind the camera

    Leary wrote and directed the pilot episode of the Fox series Canterbury's Law, which he also produced; it was canceled after eight episodes.

  5. Beyond film

    Leary's 1993 sardonic song "A**hole", which dealt with the stereotypical American male, gained much notoriety. The Triple J Hottest 100 poll of 1993 voted it No. 1.

  6. A role that slipped away

    Denis Leary had a role in Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers, the 1994 film, but that role was eventually cut from the movie.
