Plot summary
Mara Baylor is a Los Angeles photographer who also works in a shop selling high-end vintage clothing. Her best friend is Alex. Over drinks she uses a dating app to line up a free dinner, and the man who answers is Jake Harrison, a cook. He admits over the meal that he is not a celebrity chef but a diner cook, recently out of culinary school and from Virginia, and he cooks her pancakes instead. They begin dating, which is new for Mara. Then her sister Jessica calls with an engagement, and Jake's brother Robbie announces his own. The invitations pile up: seven weddings in a single year, and Mara, who watched her parents' painful divorce, has never been sure she is the marrying type.
