Plot summary
RJ the raccoon tries to steal a bear's stockpile of food and loses the whole haul, so Vincent the bear gives him one week to replace it. On the first day of spring, a family of woodland animals led by the turtle Verne wakes from hibernation to find their forest replaced by a housing development behind a giant hedge. Food is scarce, and RJ tells the group they can eat better by scavenging from the humans, while Verne argues that plants and bark will do. The other animals follow RJ's lead and start gathering what they find. When Gladys Sharp, the neighborhood association president, spots the animals, she brings in an exterminator, Dwayne LaFontant.

- Bill Murray and Harold Ramis were first considered for RJ and Verne. In July 2002 Jim Carrey was announced as RJ with Garry Shandling as Verne, but Carrey dropped out in October 2004 and was replaced by Bruce Willis, although some of Carrey's lines remained in the film.
- The atmospheric phenomenon called STEVE was named after this film's hedge, the barrier that divides the animals' forest from a new housing development.
- For the Japanese and Korean dubs, singer BoA both voices Heather the opossum and sings the theme songs: "KEY OF HEART" for the Japanese release and "People Say" for the Korean one.
- The film cost about $100 million to make, with allocated overhead included, and in the end netted about $50 million - not bad, as the account puts it, but not the $300-$400 million that Shrek netted.
