Plot summary
Lance Barton is a struggling comedian and bicycle messenger who cannot win over a crowd, though his manager, Whitney Daniels, has lined up a shot at the farewell Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater. Riding home, he is distracted by Sontee Jenkins and hit by a truck. He wakes in heaven, where the angels King and Keyes admit he was taken before his time and that his own body is gone. Their solution is the newly available body of Charles Wellington III, a wealthy businessman. Lance refuses until he learns that Sontee is camped in Wellington's penthouse, handcuffed to a coffee table in protest. He agrees to borrow the body until a better one turns up.
