Matt Lucas
Biography
Matt Lucas is an English actor, comedian, writer and television host who grew up in London and came to wide notice through Little Britain, the sketch series he wrote and performed with David Walliams, and their later show Come Fly with Me. He first drew attention on The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer and on Shooting Stars, where he played George Dawes, the baby who kept the scores, from 1995 to 2009. On television he later played Nardole in Doctor Who between 2015 and 2017, and he co-presented The Great British Bake Off with Noel Fielding from 2020 to 2023. On stage he took the part of Monsieur Thénardier in Les Misérables, including the 25th anniversary concert and the All-Star Staged Concert. He played Tweedledee and Tweedledum in Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Joe the taxi driver in Paddington (2014), and he appeared in Wonka (2023) and Gladiator II (2024).

Getting ready for a role
In 2024, Lucas had a minor part as the Master of ceremonies in Gladiator II. He said his agent told him to make a tape, and he recorded it 80 times before it went to the producers.
Early training
Lucas studied drama at the University of Bristol from 1992 to 1995 but did not complete his degree. At the National Youth Theatre he met David Walliams, who became his future collaborator.
Big break
Little Britain began when trainee BBC radio producer Ashley Blaker, an old friend from Haberdashers', bumped into Lucas in London and Lucas took him to the Groucho Club to share his sketch show ideas.
First role
Lucas's first television drama role came in 2005. He played a Venetian duke in Casanova, the BBC historical serial written by Russell T Davies.
