Geraldine James
Biography
Geraldine James is an English actress who has worked in theater, television and film. Born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, she studied drama at the Drama Centre London and spent three years in repertory and school theater. She became known for playing Sarah Layton in The Jewel in the Crown, and the television film She's Been Away brought her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress. Her films include Gandhi (1982), Sherlock Holmes (2009), Alice in Wonderland (2010), The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), 45 Years (2015) and Downton Abbey (2019), in which she played Queen Mary. On television she appeared in Band of Gold, The Sins and Little Britain, and from 2017 to 2019 she played Marilla Cuthbert in Anne with an E. She was appointed an OBE in 2004, and Peter Hall placed her among the great English classical actresses.
