Biography

Johnny Knoxville is an American actor, producer, and screenwriter known for his stunt work and for co-creating the MTV show Jackass and its film franchise. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, he moved to California to pursue acting, appearing in commercials and as an extra before pitching a self-defense equipment stunt to Big Brother magazine. That footage helped him, Jeff Tremaine, and Spike Jonze launch Jackass on MTV. Knoxville starred in Jackass: The Movie (2002), Jackass Number Two (2006), Jackass 3D (2010), Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (2013), which gave his character Irving Zisman a storyline, and Jackass Forever (2022), with Jackass: Best and Last (2026) closing the series. His acting credits include Men in Black II (2002), A Dirty Shame and Walking Tall (2004), The Dukes of Hazzard and The Ringer (2005), The Last Stand (2013), and Skiptrace (2016). He provided the voice of Leonardo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014). He produced through Dickhouse Productions and Hello Junior, and hosted podcasts.

  1. First role

Knoxville's first screen work was as Keanu Reeves's stand-in on Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 film Bram Stoker's Dracula, before he began writing and pitching his own stunt ideas to magazines.

  2. A role that slipped away

Before Jackass premiered on MTV, Knoxville and his crew declined a weekly offer to do their stunts for Saturday Night Live, but he went on to host a 2005 episode of the show.

Knoxville came up with the idea of testing self-defense equipment on himself. Jeff Tremaine's skateboarding magazine Big Brother took interest, and the filmed stunts appeared in the magazine's "Number Two" video.

  4. A role that slipped away

Johnny Knoxville played a character in Killshot, the film version of Elmore Leonard's novel that John Madden directed, but that character was cut from the movie's final edit.

  5. A role that slipped away

Knoxville's planned leading role debut was a holiday comedy called The Tree, set for release in late 2001, but the project never came together.
