Plot summary
In Bethlehem, the Innkeeper's trade is losing ground to Tony Iscariot's flashier motel, and the rent is due. After a bad year he despairs and prepares to hang himself, but God stops him and says a shining star is coming. The Innkeeper reads this as King Herod, a standup comedian touring the region. He clears the inn of guests, his mother-in-law among them. His wife Ruth is furious, says he is chasing dreams, and walks out; she and Tony, whose romance lies in the past, talk of starting it again. In the desert, Joseph makes a fire for Mary, who is pregnant, on their journey to Bethlehem.
