Plot summary
Country rock singer Gram Parsons dies in 1973 after an overdose of morphine and tequila. He had known Elvis and spent time with the Rolling Stones. In life he and Phil Kaufman, his road manager, agreed that whoever died first would be cremated out in the desert, at the Joshua Tree National Monument, a stretch of desert they both cherished. Kaufman sets out to keep that promise. He pays off mortuary staff, takes a psychedelic hearse on hire from Larry Oster-Berg, and carries five gallons of petrol for the burning. Across the southern California desert he is followed by Parsons' former girlfriend, his own girlfriend, and the singer's stepfather, Stanley Parsons.
