Plot summary
Eugene Mulvihill made his fortune in penny stocks before buying two ski resorts, Great Gorge and Vernon Valley, in Vernon Township, New Jersey. Robert E. Brennan, who had worked for Mulvihill at Mayflower Securities, funded the park. When New Jersey legalized casino gambling, investors expected Vernon to grow into another Las Vegas, and because the state's winters were short, Mulvihill built machines to make artificial snow, then turned to water rides for the summers. Action Park opened in 1978 with a philosophy of no rules. Former guests and employees describe the Cannonball Loop, the SuperSpeed Waterfalls, the Alpine Slides and the Tarzan Swings, along with a park culture that reflected 1980s New Jersey.
