John Mahoney
Biography
John Mahoney was an English-born American actor who moved to the United States and began his career in Chicago with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. In 1986 he won a Tony for his supporting turn in a Broadway revival of John Guare's play The House of Blue Leaves. He became best known as Martin Crane on the NBC sitcom Frasier, a role he played from 1993 to 2004 and which brought him two Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations. His films included Suspect and Moonstruck (both 1987), Tin Men (1987), Eight Men Out (1988), Say Anything... (1989), Barton Fink (1991), In the Line of Fire (1993), Reality Bites (1994), The American President (1995) and Primal Fear (1996), and he voiced characters in the animated features Antz (1998), The Iron Giant (1999) and Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001). He died in 2018.

A change of course
Unhappy with his career, Mahoney enrolled in acting classes at St. Nicholas Theatre. The experience led him to leave his day job and focus on acting full time.
A first
Mahoney's first voice job was not animation but a W. B. Yeats radio piece, "The Words upon the Window-Pane," for the National Radio Theater of Chicago.
Languages
After joining the U.S. Army, Mahoney worked hard to lose his English accent because he did not want to "stand out" in his new country. He used an American accent from then on.
Beyond film
Mahoney said that of all the plays he did, his early work in Orphans affected people the most. He still got mail from it and people stopping him on the street, 20 years later.
