Plot summary
In 1957, Bryce Loski and his family move into the house next door to Julianna Baker, called Juli, and she decides at once that she loves him. He is unsettled by the attention and avoids her. Four years on, Juli is still smitten and seldom leaves him in peace, so Bryce pretends to go out with Sherry Stalls, a popular classmate Juli dislikes. When Bryce's friend Garrett tells Sherry what is really going on, she ends it, and Bryce is left hoping that seventh grade will bring Juli someone new. The following year his grandfather Chet Duncan comes to live with the Loskis. Juli treasures an old sycamore in the neighborhood, and when a crew comes to cut it down she climbs it and will not come down until her father, Richard, talks her to the ground.
