Andre Braugher
Biography
Andre Braugher was an American actor who worked extensively in stage, television, and film. Born in Chicago in 1962 and raised in the Austin neighborhood, he trained at Stanford University and the Juilliard School. He began his career with The Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park, appearing in plays such as Much Ado About Nothing and Hamlet. His first film role was in Glory (1989), and he became known for playing Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street, winning a Primetime Emmy Award in 1998. He won a second Emmy for the miniseries Thief and later starred as Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, for which he received four Emmy nominations. His other films included Primal Fear (1996), City of Angels (1998), Frequency (2000), The Mist (2007), and Salt (2010). He was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards and died in 2023.

Braugher made his film debut in Glory in 1989. He played Thomas Searles, an educated free Black man from the North who enlists in the Union Army's first Black regiment.

Braugher's acting career began with The Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park, where he appeared in Much Ado About Nothing, Coriolanus, Twelfth Night, Hamlet, and As You Like It.
Beyond film
At the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, Braugher took the title role in Henry V for the 1996 Shakespeare in the Park series, and he received an Obie Award for that performance.
Early training
Braugher earned a scholarship to Stanford University, where he initially majored in engineering before graduating with a BA in theater in 1984, then attended Juilliard's Drama Division, graduating in 1988.
Beyond film
In 2002, Braugher narrated Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet, an award-winning documentary shown on PBS and made by Unity Productions Foundation. He also narrated The Murder of Emmett Till for PBS.
