Biography
John Alvin was an American actor whose film, television, and theater career ran from the 1940s to the 1990s. Born in Chicago in 1917, he moved to California in 1939 to study at the Pasadena Playhouse. He signed an exclusive four-year contract with Warner Brothers during the World War II era and appeared in more than 25 of its films, including Northern Pursuit (1943) and Objective, Burma! (1945). He was borrowed by 20th Century Fox for the Oscar-nominated The Fighting Sullivans (1944), and later films included Irma la Douce (1963) and Alfred Hitchcock's Marnie (1964). He also had a television career from the 1950s to the 1980s, with roles on Leave It to Beaver, All in the Family, and Murder, She Wrote. His theater work included The Student Prince and The Cradle Will Rock, and he appeared in a production of Rain directed by Charlie Chaplin. He largely retired in the 1990s, with Milk Money (1994) as his final film.
