Plot summary
Libby Saul stammers and lives on her family's land near the California coast, with a mother and father who have stopped speaking to each other. She carries messages between them. Out wandering one day, she comes upon a crew of convicts building a road along the shore, and she slips back over several days to watch from a distance. One of them, Barry Burnette, holds her attention. Jeff Barker, an engineer just out of the Army, works alongside the crew, and Libby's father invites him to dinner at the farm. Libby's mother hopes the engineer will court her daughter and marry her. Barker asks Libby to go dancing; her shyness keeps her from accepting, and after he leaves her disappointed father slaps her face, so she runs away from home that night.
