Plot summary
Major Singleton is the tobacco magnate of Kingsmont, North Carolina, and years earlier he foreclosed on the Royles, driving Brant and his father away. Brant comes back now to settle the estate his uncle left. Singleton's daughter Margaret is there. When Brant stops her runaway carriage she greets him coolly, and she then goads her father into confronting him at the hotel. John Barton, an inventor who needs money for a cigarette-rolling machine, sees the scene and approaches Brant. Brant persuades Sonia Kovac, once a cigarette girl who now runs a bordello in the house her mother left her, to put money into the machine and become his partner. He also hires Chris Malley, a medicine show huckster, as his second in command.
