Helmut Dantine
Biography
Helmut Dantine was an Austrian-American actor who specialized in Nazi officers and German soldiers in 1940s thrillers. Raised in Vienna, he moved to California, studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, and broke in at the Pasadena Playhouse before a Warner Bros. talent scout signed him. His first credited screen role, a captured German pilot in Mrs. Miniver (1942), drew him attention, and Warners kept him busy in war films including Edge of Darkness (1943), Mission to Moscow (1943), and Northern Pursuit (1943). He played a sympathetic refugee in Casablanca before later parts in Call Me Madam (1953), War and Peace (1956), and The Story of Mankind (1957). He directed Thundering Jets, worked in live television with Shadow of the Cloak, and, as roles thinned, moved into producing, serving as executive producer on Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) and The Wilby Conspiracy (1975). He died in 1982.

First role
Dantine started acting in the U.S. at the Pasadena Playhouse, and to cover his costs he ran two gas stations. A Warner Bros talent scout noticed him and signed him to a contract.
A role that slipped away
Dantine replaced Marlon Brando in the 1947 Broadway play The Eagle Has Two Heads, co-starring with Tallulah Bankhead; the production was a flop that lasted only 29 performances.
Behind the camera
Dantine took the director's chair for Thundering Jets, a 1958 military aviation movie with Rex Reason, and that same year he kept acting in Fraulein and Tempest.
