Plot summary
Vincent Parry escapes San Quentin inside a metal laundry barrel, having been convicted of killing his wife. He gets away by riding with a passing motorist, who hears a radio report about an escaped convict and grows suspicious; Parry knocks him unconscious. Irene Jansen, a wealthy stranger who has followed the case and thinks Parry was wrongly convicted, picks him up, gets him through a police roadblock, and brings him into San Francisco. She lets him stay in her apartment and buys him clothes. A sympathetic cab driver, Sam, takes Parry to a plastic surgeon.

- According to Lauren Bacall's autobiography By Myself, Bogart's hair began to fall out in clumps during the filming of Dark Passage, the result of alopecia areata, and by the end of filming he wore a full wig.
- The film uses the “subjective camera” technique, in which the viewer sees the action through the protagonist's eyes; Robert Montgomery had used it in Lady in the Lake in 1946, Abel Gance in France for Napoléon in 1927, and Rouben Mamoulian for the first five minutes of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in 1931.
- At the time that Dark Passage was shot, Humphrey Bogart was the best-paid actor in Hollywood, averaging $450,000 a year.
