Plot summary
The San Francisco police hand Lieutenant Virgil Tibbs the murder of a prostitute. His inquiries point to Logan Sharpe, a street preacher leading one side in the city's referendum on an urban renewal project, and a friend of Tibbs. Sharpe says he called on the woman in his professional capacity, to counsel her spiritually, and that she was alive and well when he left her apartment. Tibbs questions Mealie Williamson, the janitor in the victim's building, and Woody Garfield, who owns the building, a shady figure who may have been the woman's pimp and who sent the janitor into hiding.
