Dane Clark

Biography

Dane Clark was an American character actor known for playing what he called Joe Average roles. Born in Brooklyn, he studied law at St. John's University before turning to acting with the Group Theatre. After Broadway work, including taking over the role of George in Of Mice and Men in 1937, he made his film debut in The Pride of the Yankees (1942) and appeared uncredited in The Glass Key (1942). Signed by Warner Bros. in 1943, he broke through in Action in the North Atlantic (1943) opposite Humphrey Bogart, then appeared in Destination Tokyo (1943) and Hollywood Canteen (1944). He had the lead in the Academy Award-winning short I Won't Play (1944). Later films included A Stolen Life (1946), Deep Valley (1947), Moonrise (1948), Without Honor (1949), Backfire (1950), and Fort Defiance (1951). He moved largely to television from the mid-1950s and appeared in The McMasters (1970). He died in 1998.

About the name
Dane Clark got his stage name from Humphrey Bogart, after Warner Bros. first tried Zane Clark but dropped it because too many people confused Zane with Jane Clark.
