Plot summary
Thomas Sullivan works as a railroad freight conductor in Waterloo, Iowa, where he and his wife, Alleta, raise five sons, George, Frank, Joe, Matt and Al, and a daughter, Genevieve, called Gen. Every day the brothers climb the water tower beside the tracks to wave to their father's train as it goes by. Their mischief includes a wrecked boat patched with mud that sinks in a lake, and a wood box built into the kitchen wall that bursts a pipe and floods the room.
