Plot summary
On her physician's advice, Brooke Gifford travels to Monterrey to recover from her parents' deaths, and there she meets Dr. Eric Ryder. Within a week they marry, and Eric brings her to his San Francisco house, where he lives with his sister Emma and his nephew Carl. Also in the house is Philip, Eric's young son from an earlier marriage, who is kept on a liquid diet. At breakfast Brooke feeds the boy and learns that he stands to inherit his grandfather's estate at twenty-five. A custody dispute over Philip is under way between Eric and his former wife Louise, and Eric forbids Brooke from feeding the child.
