Monte Blue
Biography
Monte Blue was an American actor who began in silent films and later became a character player. Born in Indianapolis, he attended Purdue University before taking work at D.W. Griffith's studios. His screen debut came with stunt and extra duties on The Birth of a Nation (1915), followed by small parts in Intolerance (1916) and stunt work on Macbeth (1916). After supporting roles for Griffith and Cecil B. DeMille, he broke through as Danton in Orphans of the Storm (1921) and became a rugged romantic lead opposite Clara Bow, Gloria Swanson, and Norma Shearer. He often appeared with Marie Prevost and played an alcoholic doctor in White Shadows in the South Seas (1928). Blue survived the switch to sound and rebuilt his career as a character actor, including the sheriff in Key Largo (1948). He retired from films in 1954 and worked in television Westerns until 1960, receiving a Hollywood Walk of Fame star that same year.
