Plot summary

At the debut of his play, college theater student Richard Collier is handed an ornate gold pocket watch by an elderly woman who asks him to come back to her. Eight years on, he is a Chicago playwright stalled by writer's block after a breakup, and a road trip brings him to the Grand Hotel. In its Hall of History he is captivated by a vintage photograph of Elise McKenna, a stage actress from the early twentieth century; library research identifies her as the woman who gave him the watch. He falls in love with her image and determines to reach 1912, assembling a vintage suit and period currency and using recorded suggestions to will himself into the past.

The film was screened exclusively at the Palace Theatre Cinema in Causeway Bay from September 12, 1981 to April 22, 1982, a total of 223 days, setting the record at that time for the longest continuous screening of a film in Hong Kong.
Jane Seymour said a Screen Actors Guild strike meant she and Christopher Reeve were not allowed to publicize the film, while Universal, worried about recouping its investment on The Blues Brothers, spent very little and ignored them completely.
Jane Seymour disclosed in 2018 that she and Christopher Reeve fell in love while working on the film, but broke up after Reeve found out his ex-girlfriend was expecting their child; the two remained close friends for the rest of Reeve's life.
