Plot summary
On Chinese New Year in 1938, Crystal Shackleford invites a solicitor, Jerome K. Arbutny, and a thief, Johnny West, to her London flat. She holds that when three strangers make one wish to Kwan Yin, the Chinese goddess of fortune and destiny, the wish is granted. The three put their names to a sweepstakes ticket on the Grand National and agree to hold it, unsold, until the race is run. Crystal wants her estranged husband David back, Arbutny wants a place in the Barrister's Club, and Johnny wants a bar of his own.

- The story was once considered a sequel of sorts to The Maltese Falcon, to star Humphrey Bogart, Sydney Greenstreet and Mary Astor, but Warner Bros. discovered the rights to the characters had reverted to Dashiell Hammett, author of the original novel.
- Bette Davis and George Brent were originally to star in the film, which at that point carried the title Three Men and a Girl.
- Warner Bros. considered Lionel Atwill, Donald Crisp, Ian Hunter and Claude Rains for Jerome K. Arbutny; Miriam Hopkins and Kay Francis for Crystal Shackelford; and Errol Flynn, David Niven, Leslie Howard, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Robert Montgomery for Johnny West.
- Director Jean Negulesco was a fan of Peter Lorre's work and fought hard to cast him as Johnny West.
- John Huston got the idea for the story from a wooden figure he bought in an antique shop while working in London, and later from events at a party in his flat; Alfred Hitchcock was at that gathering and liked the story, but nothing came of it.
