Patricia Neal
Biography
Patricia Neal was an American actress whose career moved between theater and film. Born in Kentucky and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, she studied drama at Northwestern before leaving for New York. She began with an understudy job on Broadway in The Voice of the Turtle, then won a Tony for her featured role in Another Part of the Forest in 1947. Her first film was John Loves Mary (1949), opposite Ronald Reagan. She appeared in The Fountainhead (1949), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), A Face in the Crowd (1957), and Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961). Her performance as a housekeeper in Hud (1963) won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She later earned a second BAFTA for In Harm's Way (1965), an Academy Award nomination for The Subject Was Roses (1968), and a Golden Globe for her role in The Homecoming: A Christmas Story, a 1971 television film. She took the title role in Robert Altman's Cookie's Fortune (1999).

Neal's first job in New York was understudying on Broadway in John Van Druten's play The Voice of the Turtle.

For her role in Lillian Hellman's Another Part of the Forest in 1946, Neal took the 1947 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play, given at the first presentation of the Tony Awards.
Early training
After moving to New York, Neal joined the Actors Studio. Through other members she met there, she went on to co-star in A Face in the Crowd, The Miracle Worker, Breakfast at Tiffany's and Hud.
Behind the award
Neal was the last surviving winner from the first Tony Awards ceremony in 1947, and after losing her original Tony, Bill Irwin gave her a surprise replacement at the 2006 ceremony.
