Plot summary
William Spence is a medical student in Stratford, Ontario, in 1904, close to finishing his training. One Sunday he passes a Methodist church and receives the call, choosing the ministry instead. Hope Morris, the woman he is to marry, accepts his decision, though her wealthy parents are disappointed. With no openings in Canada, the church assigns him to a small Iowa town as a circuit minister. The couple moves often, lives in plain parsonages, and gets by on poor boxes and wedding fees.
