Plot summary
Late at night in Los Angeles, oil geologist Elliott Carson stops his girlfriend, heiress Jean Courtland, from throwing herself in front of a train. Over dinner the two meet John Triton, an acquaintance of Jean who says he is clairvoyant, and Elliott accuses him of driving Jean toward suicide by foretelling her death so that he can take her fortune. John answers with the story of twenty years earlier, when he toured in a magic act with his fiancée Jenny and with Jean's father, Whitney Courtland, and learned that he could see events before they happened. Whitney trusted the visions and used them to gamble and to trade stocks, building a fortune. John left Jenny behind and went away, and he tells the couple of the Oklahoma land he advised Whitney to buy.
