Plot summary
Frank Thompson comes to in a New York City street after wreckage from a building nearly lands on him, and finds a year missing from his life. His apartment has been rented to someone else, and his wife, Virginia, who has been living on her own, is stunned to see the husband who vanished without a word. Around the neighborhood he goes by another name, Danny, and a man named Harry Diedrich has been killed, a murder Frank cannot remember committing. Detective Joe Marucci stays on his trail. Where he woke, Ruth Dillon, who calls him Danny, brings him to the mansion where she works as a servant, home of the wealthy Diedrich family. The family matriarch, mute and housebound, witnessed the killing and speaks only in sign language.
