Plot summary
Two drifters, Duke and Boots, hang around a gasoline station on the Pacific Ocean, where they menace the owner and help themselves to his stock. Duke has lately been denied a woman's touch, and he promises to fix Boots up with one. They get a ride from a motorist and make him trail an attractive woman, Ann Carlyle, to her house. The two of them break into an empty house next door to hers and eavesdrop through its walls. What they hear is that Ann is unhappily married to Roger, a man older than she is. The two men set about manipulating her.

Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy watched Private Property the night of the pivotal 1960 West Virginia Democratic primary, and she called it "some awful, sordid thing about some murder in California"; their friend Ben Bradlee recalled the couple joked its Legion of Decency condemnation would have helped with Catholic-hating voters.
- Private Property was denied a seal by the Motion Picture Production Code and rated "C," or "condemned," by the Catholic National Legion of Decency for "highly suggestive sequences, dialogue and music," yet the New York Board of Censors passed it without any changes.
- Private Property was shot in 10 days by a crew of 37, with $400 of the budget going for furniture; to avoid overtime costs, the filmmakers sometimes had to stop shooting in mid-sentence.
