Plot summary
On the island of Manakoora, Terangi works as first mate on a schooner that sails between the islands. He marries Marama, the daughter of the chief, who begs him not to sail again; he leaves her behind. In Tahiti the crew goes to a bar, and when a white man orders them out, Terangi strikes him and breaks his jaw. The man has political connections, and the governor sentences Terangi to six months despite Captain Nagle's objections. Back on Manakoora, Dr. Kersaint asks Governor De Laage to bring Terangi home to serve his sentence on parole. De Laage refuses to bend his stern reading of the law, though Nagle, Father Paul, and the governor's own wife plead with him.
