Plot summary
A cargo plane leaves Peru for Panama in a storm. Midflight the co-pilot answers an alarm at the cabin door and finds only one passenger, Charles Hasso, who says he tried to stop the other man from going out. Hasso carries the missing man's briefcase through Panamanian customs and is questioned by Major Rues of the secret police. He hires private detective Dan Hammer as a bodyguard for two days. Oil executive Walter Gredson, who expected a man from Peru with a map of oil wells, pays Hammer five thousand dollars to find Hasso and the map. Maxine Manning, performing at a nightclub, catches Hammer's eye, and the artist Eric Molinar asks Hammer to work as his guide.

- Director Ted Tetzlaff was a cinematographer who had directed before World War II; to get the Riff-Raff job from producer Jack Gross he accepted a salary cut.
- Pat O'Brien wrote in his 1967 memoirs that he asked RKO production head Charlie Koerner to give screenwriter Martin Rackin a studio contract, noting Rackin had been in the Air Force and later became a top Paramount executive.
- Martin Rackin, who had already written two Pat O'Brien films at RKO, Bombardier and Marine Raiders, reportedly wrote the Riff-Raff story while serving in the Air Force.
